Bill Newsome led the way in the penultimate round of the Tri-Star Winter League at Rosedale Fishery on Sunday, putting a respectable 31lb 2oz on the scales from peg 18.

Fishing the long pole with maggot, he tempted four carp to the net plus lots of small roach.

Neil Hogg was second with 26lb 8oz from peg 20.

The normally prolific Forest Lane fishery at Alne was a tough nut to crack last Friday, with Phil Roberts the only angler breaking double figures in Westland’s AC’s match.

Alternating between the eight and 13-metre pole lines with maggot for bait at peg 26, he took 12lb 8oz of barbel to the 1lb 8oz mark.

Alan Creaser won the race for second with 9lb 8oz, relegating Newsome into third with 9lb 4oz.

Four bream to the 3lb mark swung the verdict Dick Rodgers’ way in last Tuesday’s Westland’s AC match on the 3B lake at Foss Hill fishery.

Casting out from peg four with the ground bait feeder and maggot, he recorded a winning 11lb 4oz.

Norton’s Terry Tierney was a close second off peg eight with 10lb 6oz.

Carp were conspicuous by their absence in last Monday’s Phoenix Veterans match at Rosedale Fishery and instead it was left to small silver fish to make up the bulk of the weights.

Tony Mellor sat at peg 19 and fished the 10-metre pole with maggot in 15 feet of water to locate 7lb 15oz of roach and skimmers in the 4oz to 6oz bracket.

Brian Hewitt sat close by at peg 17 and secured runners-up place with 6lb 7oz.
