THORNTON-LE-DALE rider Barrie Darrell’s form continued to improve as he won clubman ‘A’ class in Scarborough District Motor Club’s trial at Low North Park on Sunday.

Overnight frost made it tricky going for the massive entry of 115 riders, but Darrell showed his experience, with his mere one-mark loss on the treacherously greasy rocks of section five proving the best of the day.

He almost blew it with a maximum on the steep tree root climb of 12 but he still finished first, ahead of Scarborough’s Alan Carr.

Port Mulgrave’s Jack Howell secured a convincing win over strong opposition in the expert class, which included Malton’s Ian Austermuhle.

Howell’s two-mark loss on the rocks of section five, which were not matched, proved crucial. Richmond’s Rob Waite was runner-up, five marks down, and Beta works rider Austermuhle finished third.

Austermuhle also advised fiancee Beth Ridley on the best line through sections to gain a creditable finish in her very first trial.
