Beckett League division one title-chasers Kirkbymoorside reserves ended division two leaders Wombleton Wanderers’ unbeaten record when knocking them out of the Ryedale Hospital Cup.

Kirkbymoorside won the fourth-round tie 5-1, although Wombleton were not at full strength and the Moorsiders had a strong side out.

Wombleton hit the woodwork twice before man-of-the-match Shaun Cox and Lee Nesfield put Kirkby two up at half-time.

Wombleton started the second half well but the Moorsiders had a fantastic 10-minute spell in which they scored three times through Jack Dowson, a Luke McLaren own goal, and Jordan Rivis. Luke Tateson scored for the visitors 10 minutes from time. Tom Clements was Wombleton’s top performer.

Goalkeeper John Towse was the villain and the hero as Union Rovers beat Sinnington on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Gary Mitchell had put the Sinners ahead, with Paul Holder equalising from the spot in normal time.

In the shoot-out, Towse saved superbly from Gary Mitchell and saw Graham Bateman fire over but he missed Union’s fifth kick to leave the score at 3-3 and take the shoot-out into sudden death.

After Anthony Taylor scored for Rovers, Towse saved from Kris Nicholson to send his side through to the semi-finals.

Sinnington’s spot-kick scorers had been Rob Atkinson, Adam Stephens and Toby Edwards, while Lee Mitchell was their man of the match.

For Union, Nicky Drew, Holder and Dan Simpson scored in the shoot-out, while Dwaine Young saw his penalty saved by Mark Langdale before Towse fired wide.

Ryedale Sports Club reserves were too strong for hosts Thornton-le-Dale reserves, winning 5-0, with goals by Ben Thompson, Andy Best, Matty Gardner and John Sherwood, plus a Gardner penalty, Thornton midfielder Tom Kettlewood and Ryedale centre-half Thompson were the men of the match.

The outstanding quarter-final between Slingsby and Thornton-le-Dale will hopefully be played this weekend.
