Leaders Wombleton Wanderers beat mid-table Thornton-le-Dale reserves 6-0 to continue their march to the division two title in their first season in the Beckett League.

Wombleton now have a three-point lead at the top with games in hand.

They scored three goals in each half on Saturday – in the only Beckett League game played that day.

Luke Tateson opened the scoring with a sharp turn and finish, brother Josh netted with a shot from just inside the area, and Jake Dennison made it three just before the interval.

Luke Tateson headed in his second, Mark Haines also headed home, and Tom Ellis scored with an unstoppable 20-yard shot – Wombleton’s 50th league goal this term in their 10th game.

Luke Tateson and Ellis were the men of the match, Trevor Clubley shining for Thornton.

Both sides will be in Ryedale Hospital Cup third round action this Saturday. The ties see Union Rovers face Sinnington, Thornton-le-Dale reserves host Ryedale Sports Club reserves, and Kirkbymoorside reserves take on Wombleton.

If games are drawn, they go straight to a shoot-out with no extra time.

The league’s management committee will soon meet to discuss the format of the Panasonic League Division 2 Cup and to start preparations for the 2014-15 season.
