KIRKBYMOORSIDE reserves moved up into second place in newitts.com Beckett League division one after a 4-0 home victory against potential title rivals Thornton-le-Dale.

All four goals came in the last half-hour, not long after Thornton had had a goal ruled out.

The Moorsiders had begun well and, although Thornton came more into the game, it was the hosts who came nearest to scoring in the first half when, after 35 minutes, they hit the crossbar with a header.

Visiting goalkeeper Rob Campbell also made three very good saves to keep the match goalless at half-time.

The visitors started the second half well, David Elliott having a 50th-minute strike disallowed for offside.

The Moorsiders then took the lead on the hour mark through veteran Alex Strickland and he added a second after 75 minutes.

Further goals came in the last 10 minutes from Aaran Rivis and Lee Nesfield to seal the points that moved the Moorsiders two points behind leaders Union Rovers with two games in hand.

Thornton-le-Dale paid for missing the chances that came their way. They sit seventh in the table but have played only four league games due to cup matches.

The men of the match were Kirkby midfielder Jack Dowson and Dale’s Taryn Midgely.

Unbeaten Sinnington, another team with title hopes, drew 2-2 at Rosedale.

The Sinners took a third-minute lead through Toby Edwards, but Rosedale equalised before the interval as Sam Burns headed the ball to Kyle Clackerty who smashed it home. An own goal after good work by Burns and Clackerty put Rosedale ahead but the Sinners levelled after 75 minutes through David Wilkinson.

Rosedale’s star men were goalkeeper Shaun Dowson and full-back Matthew Farrow. Adam Stephens was Sinnington’s man of the match, teenagers Jon Mitchell, Will Sanders and Christian Nicholson also impressing.

Heslerton came from behind to win 3-1 at Gillamoor.

Kieran Spry put the hosts ahead but Heslerton stepped up a gear in the second half. They changed things round on 65 minutes – goalkeeper Simon Oxendale going up front, midfielder Gareth Driver donning the gloves, and player-manager Marc Craig coming off the bench – and within five minutes Tom Harrison equalised.

Harrison, man of the match at left-back, then set up Ben Duffill to put Heslerton ahead and at the final whistle Sam Rackham sealed the turnaround.

Gillamoor centre-back Tony Cass was their man of the match on his debut.

Duncombe Park stormed back with three goals in the last 20 minutes but it wasn’t enough as they lost 4-3 to Ryedale Sports Club reserves.

Debutant Dave Jenkins, with a 25-yard drive and brilliant solo goal, either side of a Ben Thompson strike set up by Phil Hutchinson, put Ryedale 3-0 up at the break, and the prolific Matty Gardner made it four.

They were still indebted to a man-of-the-match display by ’keeper Dave Whitelock for the victory.

Wombleton Wanderers, second in division two, hammered third-placed Easingwold Town 3rds 6-1.

Easingwold took an early lead through Tom Horner’s fine goal but within two minutes Josh Tateson equalised and Wombleton went ahead when Paul Grayson’s shot was deflected in by Sam Appleton.

Wombleton got well on top after the break, scoring further goals through Luke Tateson, man-of-the-match Luke McLaren, Tom Ellis and a second for Josh Tateson.

Wombleton, for whom Jack Walsh also starred, are now a point behind leaders Union Rovers 2nds with three games in hand.

A Paul Downes penalty five minutes from time gave Union Rovers 2nds a 1-1 draw against Snainton reserves, Jono Davies having put the visitors ahead on the hour mark.

Davies, team-mate Dave Pearson and Union midfielder Phil Smith were the men of the match.

Settrington won 2-1 in a very close game at Thornton-le-Dale reserves.

Thornton took the lead through Lee Alardice but Harry Thistleton and Dec Copland responded before half-time.

The top performers were Thornton’s Kenny Temple and Setty’s Andy Rouph.

Scott Simpson finished with seven goals as Slingsby hammered Norton United, who started with only 10 men as their goalkeeper failed to turn up and finished with nine after James Bradshaw departed injured.

Graham England got their goal, with Danny Nunwick (2), Luke Gibson (2), Paul Richardson, Fraser Hall and Glyn Brown piling on the pain at the other end.

Simpson and Mike Anderson were Slinsgby’s top performers, Steve Spaven standing out for poor United.

Goals by man-of-the-match Joe Schofield and Tyrone Walton gave Heslerton reserves a 2-1 win over Kirkdale United, Alex Croall scoring a late reply.

 

• SECOND division side Rillington Athletic reserves stunned visitors Union Rovers by taking a first-half lead in their Beckett League Ryedale Hospital Cup second round tie.

However, Union, division one leaders, changed things around at the break and bagged goals from man-of-the-match left-winger Anthony Taylor (2), Dean Sleightholme, Shane Olley and Danny Simpson to sail in the last eight.

Jordan Horsley had got the goal for Rillington, for whom centre-back Ryan Oxendale starred.

The draw for the quarter-finals is: Union Rovers v Sinnington, Thornton-le-Dale Res v Ryedale SC Res, Kirkbymoorside Res v Wombleton Wanderers, Slingsby v Thornton-le-Dale.
