Hockey: Pickering II spiked in division five
9:00am Wednesday 16th October 2013 in Sport
A MAKESHIFT Pickering II side went down 7-3 at home to Slazengers III in Yorkshire Women’s League division five.
The Pikes were always going to be up against it as their original line-up was hit by illness. With only ten players available – three of whom had not played before – they battled hard in the first half.
However, they were unable to stem the flow of goals as Slazengers capitalised on their chances to lead 4-1 by half-time, Bev Nicholson grabbing the hosts’ goal.
Pickering picked up their game in the second half and a mazy run from player of the match Emma Hoyle was finished with a great strike from the top of the circle.
The visitors hit back, but Hoyle netted again with an identical stike into the corner to give Pickering hope. They maintained their momentum in attack, but that left them vulnerable at the back and Slazengers popped another two goals away from quick breaks.
The seconds travel to Thirsk II on Saturday (kick off 1.30pm).
Pickering I will aim to follow up their 9-0 win at Huddersfield Dragons III when they host Sheffield University Bankers II on Saturday (1.30pm).
