Hockey: Old Malton off the mark
9:00am Wednesday 16th October 2013 in Sport
OLD MALTON I registered their first win of the Yorkshire Men’s League premier division season as they beat hosts Leeds Gryphons III 2-0.
Facing their opening away game of the season against a Leeds side with a full squad of 16 players, the Ryedale side knew they would have to produce their best form.
The two sides spent the first 15 minutes trying to adjust to a slippery pitch, which was leading to a host of unforced errors.
Goalkeeper Tom Bumby performed well for the visitors, while his opposite number was also tested in the early stages.
Old Malton shocked their hosts by taking the lead from their second short corner of the match, Sam Woodhead finishing off a smart move.
Leeds were using their full complement of replacements but Old Malton’s defence stood firm.
The Gryphons had the ball in the net but, after a discussion between the umpires, the goal was ruled out and Old Malton made it safely through to half-time.
Leeds went on the attack in the second half but Joe Barker and Dominic Coates both put in strong performances in defence for Old Malton.
When Old Malton managed to break out of defence Tom Brough was able to hold the ball up front. After he was fouled, the resulting short corner was flicked home by Dan Fowler to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Leeds were unable to find a way past the defence, with Sam Woodhead leading by example.
Old Malton host Sheffield Hallam III at the Northern Ryedale Sports Centre on Saturday (kick off 3pm).
