Richard Fahey gelding has great chance of Knavesmire payday
Baccarat, winner of the Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon in August, can enjoy another big payday at York’s final meeting of the season tomorrow.
The Malton gelding has since run in the Ayr Gold Cup and, although he didn’t manage to capture Scotland’s premier sprint, he produced a solid performance to finish fifth.
Lightly raced this season, and as a consequence still open to further improvement, Baccarat has every chance of landing the hugely competitive £75,000 Coral Sprint Trophy.
His trainer, Richard Fahey, also has solid claims in the other feature race, the £45,000 coral.co.uk Rockingham Stakes, with Rufford.
The juvenile finished second in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury three weeks ago, when he found only stablemate Supplicant too strong. Supplicant is also out tomorrow, but heads to Newmarket for a Group 1 assignment. If Rufford can repeat his Newbury effort, he should be hard to beat in this Listed contest.
York jockey Robert Winston has picked up a good ride for Godolphin on Excellent Result in the Coral App Download From The App Handicap.
A winner at Ascot in useful company last time, Excellent Result looks a horse to follow for the remainder of the season.
There is precious little form to go on in the Coral UK Maiden Stakes, but it may be a horse without any form who prevails.
Premium Pressure, a well-bred son of War Front, appeals on pedigree and it is also significant that shrewd trainer David Barron is starting him off at York on behalf of owners Qatar Racing. Those are enough clues for me to land him with a sporting nap vote to make a winning debut. Graham Gibbons rides.
At Newmarket, Norton’s John Quinn bids to go one better in the £250,000 Betfred Cesarewitch Handicap than 12 months ago when Countrywide Flame was a narrowly-beaten runner-up. The Norton trainer has two runners this time – Moidore and Recession Proof – and the former is of particular interest, especially if more rain comes.
A resolute stayer and useful hurdler, Moidore finished a creditable fourth at Ayr last time out. Daryl Byrne’s 5lb claim will also come in handy.
The £403,000 Dubai Dewhurst Stakes takes pride of place on Newmarket’s top-notch card and all eyes will be on War Command from the Aidan O’Brien yard.
Beaten only once in four starts this season, the juvenile was most recently successful in a Grade 2 race at the Curragh. A previous runaway winner of the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, he looks the real deal.
Richard Fahey runs Supplicant in the Group 1 Vision.ae Middle Park Stakes. The colt has won four times this term, most notably the Grade 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury. Tough and consistent, he would prefer some ease in the ground and is well placed to run a big race under Ryan Moore.
Fahey and Moore also team up with Tales Of Grimm in the closing Darley Stakes.
The former Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt won well at Newbury last time out on only his second start for Fahey. A bold bid can be expected in this Group 3 contest.
