Football: North Riding County cup misery for Ryedale sides
4:01pm Wednesday 9th October 2013 in Sport
LADY LUCK did not smile on Thornton-le-Dale as they lost 1-0 at Richmond Town reserves in the North Riding County FA’s Saturday Challenge Cup.
The only goal of the first round tie was scored in the 87th minute, after Rory Lancaster and Joe Wootton had both squandered good chances to put newitts.com Beckett league side Dale ahead.
Danny Russell was Dale’s man of the match at centre half.
York Minster Engineering League division one high-fliers Brooklyn also bowed out of the competition after a first defeat of term.
Brooklyn fell 3-1 at home to Lealholm, despite going ahead through a first goal of the season for last year’s top scorer Andrew Phillips – heading home, in off a post, from an Andrew Metcalfe corner.
Philips almost doubled the lead, too, with a fine left-footed effort, but the ’keeper’s super save seemed to spur the visitors on as they then started playing some fluent football, equalising after a poor clearance.
In a hard-fought second-half, Mikey Brown missed a great chance for Brooklyn – blazing over an empty net from close range following man-of-the-match Phillips’ run and inch-perfect cut-back – before Lealholm went ahead as the clock ticked down.
Brooklyn, having used all their substitutes, then went down to 10 men as centre-half Sean Walker departed injured and, as they pushed forward, another poor defensive decision allowed Lealholm to seal victory.
Manager Matty Hood said: “We weren’t at the races and were deservedly beaten.”
Brooklyn reserves had better luck – beating Scarborough & District League side Scalby reserves 5-4 on penalties after the game had ended 2-2.
Two more Scarborough League teams were knocked out in shoot-outs.
Flixton, with a brace from Robin Dixon, drew 2-2 with Hillside, from Northallerton, before losing 6-5 on spot-kicks.
Cayton Corinthians’ tie with Brotton Railway Arms ended goalless, Brotton winning 4-2 on penalties.
West Pier had a better time of it, thrashing Askrigg United 7-1 thanks to goals by Gareth Sygroves (2), Miket Barker (2), Martin Cooper, James Ledden and Neil Thomas.
Edgehill were full value for a 7-1 win at York side Civil Service. Ricky Greening (2), Rob Nelson, Aaron Jenking, Liam Cooper, Danny Collins and Dave Jenking were on target.
Fellow Scarborough side Athletico 2B lost 6-0 to Stokesley Sports Club reserves, while Falsgrave failed to raise a team for the trip to Spennithorne & Harmby. Seamer Sports were supposed to visit Boosbeck United but Boosbeck also failed to raise a side.
In the East Riding County FA Cup, Scarborough League side Filey Town had a great 7-2 win at Withernsea with goals by Shaun Naylor (3), Ben Brigg (2), Laylan Flynn and Liam Sugden.
