Hockey: ’Keeper shines in Pickering's defeat
3:03pm Wednesday 2nd October 2013 in Sport
SARAH WILKINSON had a great debut in goal but could not prevent Pickering II losing 3-1 to Barnsley in Yorkshire Women’s League division five.
Play had been evenly matched in the first half but the visitors went ahead and took control in the second half to add two more goals before Sophie Wilson netted a penalty stroke for the home side.
Bev Nicholson and Hannah Hairsine, pictured, were strong in midfield in the first half, enabling the Pikes to gain ground with good early passing as both teams moved the ball around quickly.
However, the hosts were unable to control play sufficiently well in the final third.
At the other end, Wilson soaked up pressure effectively at sweeper, but her side were unlucky to go 1-0 down at half-time, conceding at a short corner.
The second half saw the visitors up their game and, despite some telling tackles from Marcia Simpson, Pickering could not stem the flow and Barnsley scored a brace. Pickering’s defence worked hard and player-of-the-match Wilkinson did well to prevent any more goals, while Lucy Ibbetson had a key role in setting up numerous attacks at the other end, which finally resulted in a penalty stroke being confidently despatched by Wilson.
Pickering I’s game at Ben Rhydding IV in the same division was postponed.
The Pikes, who were beaten 4-3 by their seconds in the opening game of the season, were unable to raise a team for the game.
The seconds are away to Epworth this Saturday (2.30pm), while the first team have no fixture.
Meanwhile, Old Malton I were without a game in the Yorkshire Men’s League premier division.
Old Malton host Boston Spa I at the Northern Ryedale Sports Centre in Pickering this Saturday (3pm).
