No joy of six as Pickering Town chief rails against exit
11:05am Tuesday 24th September 2013 in Sport
EVEN a 6-0 win against Garforth Town tonight will not improve the mood of Pickering Town manager Jimmy Reid.
Reid was raging after his side were dumped out of the FA Vase following a 6-2 second qualifying round home defeat to Crook Town on Saturday, warning that his patience is fast running out.
The Pikes host Garforth tonight (7.45pm) and then Liversedge on Saturday in a Northern Counties East League premier division double-header that could decide the future of several squad members.
Exits from the Vase and FA Cup have sandwiched thumping victories over some of the premier division’s lesser lights Lincoln Moorlands (6-0), Winterton (7-1) and Staveley (6-2).
Reid said: “I will probably feel worse about Saturday’s result if we beat Garforth 6-0 tonight.
“The players have shown they can do it, but we can’t afford to wait for a given time or given day, when the wind is blowing in the right direction. They need to perform every time they play.
“They need to be coming off the pitch with no petrol in the tank. If not, they are not doing it properly. Not many of them were running on red on Saturday.”
He added: “The damage is done and if we win tonight it doesn’t matter to me.
“You judge your season on games in the FA Cup, the FA Vase, and against teams like Bridlington and Brighouse, and we haven’t done very well.
“I can’t accept that defeat on Saturday. If the players are happy with it, they won’t be at the club very long.
“It is down to the players. Too many were looking at others to do the work on Saturday and it wasn’t good enough.
“We now have to regroup and look for an acceptable response and reaction to the rollicking they got in the dressing room on Saturday.”
John Heads and Tom Adams are expected to miss out with injury, while Reid said Liam Shepherd was a doubt with a “thigh tweak”.
Selby Town travel to Yorkshire Amateur in division one tonight.
Scarborough Athletic are at Brigg Town in Evo-Stik League division one south.
