Malton & Norton beat Wheatley Hills 32-17
9:18am Monday 23rd September 2013 in Sport
The visitors are among the North One East promotion favoutites, but, although badly beaten in the set scrummage area, Malt’s lightweight pack were first to everything and the line-out work of Tom Parsons and Sam Stephenson was excellent.
The hosts also had too much gas in the backs for Wheatley Hills with wingers James Bulmer and Tom Newitt scoring three of the five Malton tries.
Injury woes continued in the third minute when makeshift second row Ali Coe was forced to leave the fray with an ankle injury to be replaced by Sam Stephenson.
Undeterred, Malton battled on and winger Bulmer danced through the defence for a fine try in the corner. He converted from the touchline and soon after extended the lead with a penalty.
A quick ball enabled full-back Ian Cooke to break and feed Bulmer for his second try and then centre Pat Fifita eased in scrum-half Tom Boyle. Bulmer’s successful kick yielded a 22-0 interval lead.
After Wheatley bagged their first score, good ball allowed Newitt to show strength, speed and commitment to cross in the corner.
Handbags reduced numbers on both sides, Wheatley driving over. The visitors folowed that with another try.
But in the dying stages prop forward Simon Thompson made yardage before hooker Alex Whittaker crossed for a well deserved final try to seal victory.
All 18 players who took part can be justifiably proud of their efforts.
Whittaker, Parsons, Bulmer all stood out but the team effort and superior fitness of the lightweight pack proved to be the winner for a determined Malton line-up.
