THIXENDALE clinched the HPH York Vale League division two title with a thrilling last-day tie with fellow promotion-chasers North Duffield.

Dale only needed a handful of points to secure the title and gained 15 after scrambling two runs from the final delivery of season.

Duffield had been bowled out for 145, Mike England taking 3-7 from four overs. Les Milburn (49) led the run chase while Nigel French thrashed 24 from 17 deliveries. But wickets fell at regular intervals, the run-rate slowed and the result went down to the wire as Dale finished on 145-6.

Opponents Duffield also went up as runners-up, as the only other side in the promotion picture, Clifton Alliance, lost against Heworth II.

Westow skipper Mark Earle ended the season on a flourish with 73, two catches and 2-18, but his side lost by 22 runs to Selby.

Dave Coverdale and Jamie Smith also took a couple of wickets as Selby posted 188-8. Despite Earle’s batting effort, plus contributions of 21 by Smith and 20 by Ali Fothergill, Westow finished short on 166-5.

Malton & Old Malton ended the summer with a whimper, being bowled out for 77 by Ovington II in division three. Jamie Spencer was the bedrock of the Malt innings with exactly 50, but lacked any support. Ovington rattled off the required runs in just 12 overs.

Des Healey produced a season’s best 6-11 in 12 overs as Stamford Bridge beat Heworth II by nine wickets in division four.

Heworth were bowled out for 88, Jamie Harvey (2-19) backing up Healey’s super spell. Bridge swept to victory as Ian Fraser (25) and Rob Gilyeat (22no) put on 55 for the opening wicket.
