Pickering Town head home to take on Winterton Rangers
SAT-NAV at the ready – Pickering Town are coming home at last.
After the entire first month of the season on the road, the Pikes return to their Recreation Ground base against Winterton Rangers tonight.
And the range on the home could not have come soon enough for Pikes manager Jimmy Reid.
Always in early travel mode because of the demands of cricket at their ground, Pickering have had a modest opening to their Northern Counties East League premier division campaign.
But now Reid wants his have-boots-will-trek troops to kick-start their term with a vengeance.
Said Reid: “We know we have to have those away games at the start of the season, but so many on the trot can get a wee bit tiring, especially the last two – to Lincoln Moorlands and Long Eaton – two of the longest trips all year.”
While the Pikes fell 2-1 at Long Eaton on Saturday, Reid was not over-fazed by the defeat, declaring: “While we are not playing as well as we can, and certainly not playing as well as we did in the final few months of last season, we are not that far away from clicking.
“At Long Eaton we hit the post and the crossbar and we created quite a few chances,” insisted the Pikes boss, who was further boosted by the return for an hour on Saturday of attacker John Heads for the first time this season from injury.
“It was good to get an hour of football in John as he is trying to catch up on his fitness. We have a nice wee run of games at home now, so I hope we can kick the season off and get right into it.”
Selby Town, still smarting from their 5-0 FA Vase exit at home to Formby at the weekend, return to NCEL first division duty with a visit to Emley tonight.
