NEWLY-CROWNED champions Heslerton toasted their Readers Scarborough Beckett League premier division title in in emphatic style with a nine-wicket win over Cayton.

Cayton wickets were scattered as Kristian Wilkinson and Adam Spaven made early inroads into their batting, slipping to 33-5 in the first 12 overs.

Paul Woodhead (33) led a minor recovery with Joel Boyer (18). Tom Sixsmith added (32) but the innings closed in the 38th over on 128, Wilkinson finishing with (3-25) and Spaven (4-33).

The innings witnessed a freak injury to umpire Les Johnson who lost a tooth when the ball slipped from Daley Wharton's hand during his delivery action and struck him in the face.

After the break, Heslerton lost skipper Anthony Stones (6) with the score on 36 but that was the end of any Cayton hopes as Alex Carrie (57 not out) and Tim Clarks (53 not out) took the champions to victory with an unbeaten partnership of 96. Carrie ended the season as Heslerton’s leading scorer with 556 runs in League matches with Adam Spaven (54 wickets) taking the bowling honours. John Crossland, on behalf of the league, presented the trophies.

Last year’s champions, Staxton, moved from fifth position to runners up after a convincing 110 run victory at Cloughton.

Nick Gibson led Staxton’s charge with 135 from 91 balls to help post a total of 260. Cloughton’s hero was Henry Whelan, who in 16 overs claimed 9-88. Replying, Paul Virr (53) Mark Bennett (40) and Andy Clyde (37) took the home team to 150 at the close.

Ebberston suffered a dramatic collapse at Flixton, losing their last six wickets for only five runs. Adrian Turnbull hit 45 of Ebberston’s total of 85. Mark Shackley claiming (5-33) from 5.1 overs and Caleb Grant (4-27) from 12 before Grant completed a successful season hitting an unbeaten 52, to hand Flixton 2nds a nine-wicket victory.

There were runs aplenty at Staithes where the home team scored 234-8 in their 45 overs against Forge Valley. After the interval, Tom Brough (74) and Tom Bumby (71) added 107 for the second wicket but from a promising 153-2 the visitors slipped to 214 all out, Craig Thompson (6-81) from 16.5 overs and Mark Allen (4-32) sharing the wickets.

In division A, Brompton secured third position in a low scoring encounter with second-placed Seamer at Brompton. The home team were all back in the pavilion for 71, Neil Fletcher (25) the only batsman to feature as Adam Morris claimed 6-28, before the visitors found batting equally difficult as Tom Pateman (5-27) ripped the heart out of their reply with a mid innings hat-trick. Sam Cooper chipped in with 2-0 from one over to gain victory for the home team by 18 runs.

It was again a family affair at Settrington where father Jonty Rounthwaite (79) and sons Eddie (45), George (30) and Charlie (25) took their total to 243-6 at tea against Sewerby 2nds, who in reply were bowled out for 87, Rob Atkin (23) their leading batsman with Andy Storey claiming 6-33 from his 12.2 overs.

Craig Sanderson (37) was the only Sherburn batsman to challenge Dean Coote (7-21) and Tom Garbutt (3-48) as the home side were all out for 80 against Nawton Grange, who went on to claim victory by nine wickets thanks largely to Tom Garbutt (25) and Charlie Allott (29no).

Scalby claimed maximum points when bottom club Wold Newton failed to raise a team.

Grindale took the division B crown at Duncombe Park, Zac Moore (39) Liam Cousins (77) and Andy Smith (44) taking them to tea on 202, Scott Plowman claiming (4-37) and David Dunn (3-19) for the home team's second Xl. Tom Jackson (4-64) and Andy Smith (6-12) ended the home team’s reply on 112, Barry Wheldon (30) top scoring.

Wykeham gained the other promotion place bowling out Forge Valley 2nds for 50 on the East Ayton ground, Ian Spence (5-23) and Gareth Barnard (4-16) enjoying their day before Craig Bateman (28) helped knock off the runs for the loss of one wicket.

Alex Ibbotson (38) Dan Hardey (29) and Ian Smith (25) helped Ryedale post 179-7 at Cayton. In reply, the home team could only muster 119 as Alex Ibbotson claimed 7-28.

Dan Outhart (8-36) and Mark Dove (2-9) bowled Fylingdales out for 55 at Staxton before the home team gained maximum points with victory by nine wickets Tom Nicholson (30 not out) and Outhart (25 not out) taking the honours.
