Darts: Bointon seals stunning fightback
3:01pm Wednesday 4th September 2013 in Sport
The new Yorkshire Super League Darts season started with a bang at The Star, Cayton. A very strong Sothall Club Baize from Sheffield provided an extremely difficult opener for the Scarborough side.
There was great news for the Cayton team pre season as Jim Gordon was invited into the Yorkshire County Squad for the first time. It comes after several years of fine performances from Gordon, and he joins a squad containing fellow Star teammates Paul Bulmer and Graham Elvidge.
The new season started in disastrous style for The Star as John Spoors was beaten 4-2 by Paul Moore in the opener. Toddy Oldfield, Olly Mitchell and Gordon were all beaten 4-0. Gordon was beaten by man of the match Kev Rimmer who threw a tidy 89 average on debut.
Up stepped the ever reliable Elvidge, who registered the first point with a great 4-2 win over the dangerous Tony Darlow. Elvidge once again showed all his qualities in a dominant display that once again included a 180 maximum.
Bulmer won a titanic tussle with Chris Gray in the sixth match. A 13-darter in the fourth leg against the darts for Bulmer gave him the edge in a nervy contest and it was the Rillington man who showed his class and composure to edge out Gray in the deciding leg.
With the momentum now shifting, it was young Cameron Spiller who once again defied his years to beat Yorkshire legend and Sheffield’s starman Mick Ridge. Both players struggled to find real form but it was Spiller who showed real bottle to hit double 10 third dart to seal a magnificent 4-2 victory.
With the match evenly balanced, the home crowd cranked up the noise as Pickering’s Spadge Bointon took on Lee Olesuik in the final match of the night.
Bointon started with a bang as he raced into a 2-0 lead but the Sheffield man hit back with two 17-darters to level.
Bointon upped the pace and won the next two nerve-racking legs to seal an incredible draw.
