Malton & Norton RUFC seek injury lift after derby drubbing

With the North One East season set to get under way this weekend – when Malton take on Cleckheaton at The Gannock – coach Chris Creber has some significant selection issues to consider.
With players crocked and unavailable because of farming and cricket commitments, six players were given their first team debuts for Malton against their East Yorkshire rivals.
Driffield showed their intent as early as the first minute when they turned over Malton possession and used their extra men to send the left winger in at the corner.
A good conversion followed and, although Malt were under severe pressure for long periods, they defended strongly until Tom Boyle left the field for repairs and his replacement, debutant Mike Slingsby, suffered a serious ankle injury almost immediately.
Fortunately, Boyle was able to resume.
Driffield raised their game again and another turnover was turned into a drive which brought the second try and conversion of the game.
Malton put some good rugby together in spells and centre Pat Fifita broke from midfield before handing on to skipper Sam Triffitt, who crossed for the visitors’ first try. Charlie Ramsay converted and hope was restored.
But Fifita was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on and, with Malton down to 14 men, Driffield scored two further tries before the half-time break.
Creber had a huge headache trying to juggle his squad and, at one stage, all of his front row resources were on the field, with many playing in unfamiliar positions.
Driffield took full advantage and ran in a succession of tries to Malton’s two consolation scores from Ramsay and Ben Woodhouse.
Creber is now hoping many of the walking wounded will have recovered in time for Saturday’s league opener.
Malton: Cooke, Stark, Fifita, Woodhouse, Williams, Ramsay, Boyle, Dobson, Buck, Salisbury, Lumley, Rounthwaite, Parsons, Stephenson, Triffitt, Subs: Richards, Hopkins, Slingsby, Welch, Featherstone
