Pickering runners clock up miles ahead of marathon season

PICKERING runners have been busy clocking up the off-road miles ahead of the autumn marathon season.
Endurance duo Nick Cousins and Andy Blades travelled north for the six-mile Guisborough Grunt race organised by Esk Valley Fell Running Club.
Ever-improving Cousins gained an impressed seventh in a strong category after finishing 33rd out of 89 runners in 51.56. Cousins in now on course for a top five position in the summer league’s over-45 competition. Not far behind was solid performer Andy Blades. He crossed the line in 53.21.
Both Cousins and Blades were also at the start line of the annual Long Distance Walkers’ Association Smuggler’s Trod challenge event setting off from Robin Hood’s Bay on August 24.
Entrants could chose a long or a short option, of 24.5 miles or 17 miles respectively, starting and finishing at a foggy Fylingthorpe Village Hall.
Lining up from Pickering Running Club were Cousins, Blades, Marion Bets, Ailish Lilley and Lynn Humpleby.
The low-lying mist failed to lift from moorland areas but the conditions did nothing to stop Blades from bagging an impressive fourth place in the long route, finishing the event in 4.16.
Despite a couple of tumbles and a chesty cough, determined Cousins made it back to the village hall in 4.20 and sixth position.
But it was Bets and Lilley who showed their steely determination and took part in the event ahead of the Yorkshire Marathon next month.
Unused to long distances, the pair decided to walk the tough course but three miles from home plucky Lilley dug deep and picked up the pace, storming back in 7.49 with Bets following in 7.58.
Long distance novice Humpleby opted for the 17-mile route in preparation for the Hardmoors Goathland Marathon in November, coming 11th position in a time of 3.50.
The next major outing for the club will be the annual Pickering and Moors 10k on Sunday, September 15. Entry can be made on the day.
