NICK Ludwell struck a blow for the fortysomethings when he won the De Vere Leeds Cup at Oulton Hall by two shots.

And he achieved a lifelong ambition to finally get his name etched on the oldest trophy in professional golf first played for in 1902.

“I’m chuffed to bits,” said Ludwell, after tagging a 69 to his opening 66 for a seven-under-par total.

“I’ve always wanted to win this event. There’s no better one as far as I’m concerned and I’ve done it on my own doorstep.

“I’m also delighted that the trophy is back in Yorkshire after being on the other side of the Pennines for three years.”

But the 41-year-old Selby professional and former European Tour pro admitted he was a “little surprised” by his success because he’d only played two competitive tournaments this season.
