Cricket: Rain saves Thixendale from defeat peril
2:46pm Wednesday 21st August 2013 in Sport
HPH York Vale League division two leaders Thixendale were bailed out of big trouble by the weather on Saturday.
They were expected to see off bottom club Thorpe Willoughby, but on a rain-affected day allowed their visitors to total 162-4, Miles Flather grabbing a couple of wickets.
Dale’s reply was stuttering on 59-5 when another downpour brought the end of proceedings.
Westow had made 153-5 against Clifton Alliance when rain ended the game, Andrew Welford having made 70 before being run out.
Amazingly given that rain abounded, all the games in division three were played to a conclusion as sides opted to reduce the number of overs from the usual 40.
Malton & Old Malton looked set for a challenging score against Melbourne at 90-2 but Malcolm Harrison came on to alter the game dramatically with a sensational seven-wicket haul for just eight runs.
Malt were bowled out for 122, James Langthorne and James Spencer both getting into the 30s.
Malton were unable to make any impression on the Melbourne openers Oliver Steels and Tim Blackmore, who knocked the runs off in style.
Malton & Old Malton II were gifted 30 points when opponents Hirst Courtney II conceded their division five fixture because they could not raise a team.
Stamford Bridge’s division four game at Burton Salmon was washed out because the pitch was waterlogged.
