FILEY Town scored the first leg of a potential double by beating Edgehill 2-0 to lift the Scarborough & District League Cup for the first time since 2007.

Former Pickering Town player Liam Barnes scored after 15 minutes and, two minutes later, Phil Dickens doubled the lead.

Filey now entertain their rivals for the league crown, West Pier, tonight (Wednesday) in what may well turn out to be the title decider.

Last Saturday, Filey thrashed Whitby Fishermen 8-1 with goals by Will Hunter (3), Les Johnson (2), Dickens, Ricky Tomlinson and James Pinder. Mark Swales replied for the Fishermen.

West Pier beat Seamer Sports 2-1.

Phil Meads headed Pier ahead and Martin Cooper added a second before the interval. Seamer scored early in the second half but Pier held out for the vital three points.

Edgehill moved up into fourth place after a 4-1 home win against Ayton, who dropped to sixth. The Edgehill marksmen were Alec Coulson (2), Dean Craig and Phil Warnett.

Last Monday, Ryedale Sports Club lost 5-1 at Newlands Park with Luke Delve, Jordan Mintoft, Ben Luntley, James Tadman and Kile Fields all scoring for the victors. Jamie Fewster bagged Ryedale’s consolation goal.

In the second division, Filey Town reserves need to win their two remaining games to clinch the title after winning 6-2 at Flixton – a result which ended Flixton’s promotion ambitions.

Stephen Kirkup twice fired Flixton into the lead, either side of a Joe Gage equaliser. But by half-time Filey were leading 4-2 thanks to two goals by Stu Dickens, one a penalty after Gage had been fouled, and a second for Gage. In the second half, Filey got well on top with further goals scored by Lalan Flynn and Dickens, to complete his hat-trick.

Leaders Falsgrave thrashed Cayton Corinthians 9-0 in their final game of the campaign. Lee Drydale hit five goals and Mikey Anderson three, with Richard Tolliday bagging the other.
