Football: Rillington’s relegation peril
3:56pm Wednesday 13th March 2013 in Sport
RILLINGTON Athletic remain in relegation danger in Scarborough & District League division two after drawing 2-2 at home with Newlands Park reserves.
Shaun Ward put Rillington ahead after 10 minutes, but Newlands led 2-1 by the interval thanks to a Stefan Moon brace. Rillington gained a deserved point thanks to a second-half strike from Gareth Thistleton.
Only six Scarborough league and cup games were played on Saturday due to wet weather forcing eight postponements.
In division one, Hunmanby United boosted their bid to beat the drop by thrashing mid-table Westover Wasps 11-0.
Man-of-the-match Cameron Dobson hit five of them and set up two more, with Tom Rees scoring three times, Ryan Baldry twice and an own goal completing the rout.
The only other first division game saw West Pier beat Ayton 4-1.
After a goalless first half, Danny Cooper (2) and Gaz Thomas, with a deflected effort, put Pier in charge. Ayton pulled a goal back when Chris McNeil’s effort went in off Steve Sheader, but substitute Phil Meads sealed Pier’s win in stoppage time.
Scalby reserves’ recent improved form continued in division three with a 4-2 win over Cayton Corinthians reserves.
Richard Simpson scored a hat-trick including two penalties, and Michael Brown also netted. For Cayton, Adam Stockell scored a penalty and Dave Wedge an own goal.
In the League Cup, Edgehill won 3-0 at Newlands Park thanks to a late treble yell.
The first half remained goalless thanks to a brilliant penalty save by Edgehill’s Darren Hodgson from Josh Hakings’ well-struck spot-kick.
The game continued to flow from end to end before Edgehill scored three goals in the last 15 minutes through Daniel Jones, Dean Craig and Alec Coulson.
Athletico 2B won their Frank White Trophy semi-final 8-1 against Sleights thanks to goals by Ben David (3), Shaun Dodson (2), Sean Goodwin (2) and Kyle May.
