Angling: Easy win for Doug Featherstone in opener

DOUG FEATHERSTONE ran away with the opening round of Malton and Norton AC’s summer aggregate series on Hundred Oaks Lake, weighing in with 37lb 14oz to finish more than 23lb ahead of his nearest rival.

Sitting at corner peg 24, he kicked off with the 13-metre pole across to the island, taking numerous chub to 12oz before a strengthening wind forced him to have a re-think.

A switch to the near-bank margin with pole and worm brought him more success in the shape of seven carp to 3lb apiece and a couple of perch, the best of which tipped the scales at 2lb.

Brian Jordan drew next to the winner and also employed pole and worm tactics to take a brace of carp, several perch and the odd chub and roach for 12lb 9oz.

Anyone who thought it was cold at the weekend should spare a though for the eight hardy anglers in Scarborough Mere AC’s latest carp match.

They spent 40 hours camped around the Mere and for their toil produced five fish between them, three of which were taken by Kev Ellis from the channel peg, resulting in a winning 33lb 15oz. Bob Airy had a single fish of 10lb 15oz, leaving Pete Hutchinson trailing in third with a bream of 3lb 4oz.

Phil Roberts led the way in last Monday’s Westland’s AC match on the Little Tench lake with 31lb 8oz. Fishing out from peg six with the 13-metre pole and pellet, he attracted F1 carp to the 1lb 8oz mark plus a scattering of skimmers to 12oz apiece.

Terry Tierney sat next to the winner at peg five and had to be content with 19lb 8oz and second place.

G B Angling Club made the trip to Forest Lane Fishery, Alne, last Tuesday. Dave Creaser won this one with around 20 barbel to the 2lb mark from peg 26, taking his final tally to 23lb.

Roberts had to settle for second this time with 23lb 4oz from peg 16.
