MALTON & Norton RUFC are mourning the sudden death of club stalwart Nigel Williams.

Mr Williams, who worked at Malton Bacon Factory, died last Friday, aged 52, after suffering a heart attack at his home in Norton.

Club spokesman Bill Laidlaw wrote on the club’s website: “It is with great shock and regret that we announce the sudden and sad death of Nigel (Bruiser) Williams.

“Our thoughts are with his wife, Julie, and all members of the Williams family at this sad time.

“Nigel was a stalwart of the club for many years. After a good playing career, and overcoming serious illness, he took up refereeing. He was always willing to do anything asked of him on behalf of Malton & Norton and especially within the mini/junior section where he would turn out in all weathers to ensure a game had a referee.

“He will be greatly missed.”

The funeral will be on Tuesday, March 19, at 1pm, at St Peter’s Church, Norton.
