Cycling: Swift success at Sledmere in Malton Wheelers’ first event of season

Malton Wheelers hosted their first big race of the season on Saturday around the hilly Wolds village of Sledmere, with Team Swift taking the first three placings.

The weather was terrible for this 10-mile time trial, with a howling wind, massive puddles from morning rain and cold temperatures.

Some riders topped 40mph with the wind at their back but the return leg was different. Team Swift’s Joel Wainman won in 25 minutes 44 seconds, while the first lady was Clifton CC’s Jessica Bacon in 29-34. The first Malton Wheeler home was Steve Kneeshaw in 27-17, finishing fifth. Thanks went to helpers and marshals.

Malton Wheelers are either hosting or supporting several events in 2013, as listed: April 28: Heart of the Wolds Sportive.

June 13: North Yorkshire Evening Road Race League 3 at Kirby Misperton.

June 22: Way of the Roses Charity Ride.

July 13-14: The Yorkshire Wolds Cycling Challenge.

July 14: Sledmere Fun Bike Ride.

July 25: North Yorkshire Evening Road Race League 6 at Kirby Misperton.

July 26 (evening): Malton Criterium.

August 31-September 1: Scarborough Festival of Cycling.

Malton Wheelers also hold regular time trials between May and August and ride every Friday and Sunday at 9am, usually doing about 50 miles. All rides start from Malton Station. Average speeds are about 16mph though easier “chairman’s rides” take place in warmer weather.
