Cup tie kicks off in wrong way
3:26pm Wednesday 6th March 2013 in Sport
A MASS brawl led to the abandonment of the York Minster Engineering League Senior Cup round one tie between Wigginton Grasshoppers and Old Malton St Mary’s.
Old Malton’s Tom Fenwick was sent off along with Wigginton’s Eddy Clapham and Jamie Green after a fight broke out involving the majority of the 22 players on the field.
Referee Neil Howlett took the decision to abandon the match seven minutes before half-time with the Ryedale side leading their hosts 3-0.
St Mary’s had thrashed Hoppers 8-0 just a few weeks earlier.
League officials will discuss the incident at their next management meeting.
The two clubs also met in the league’s Reserve Cup first round, Old Malton beating the Hoppers 1-0.
Hoppers had lifted the trophy last year, knocking Old Malton out along the way, but they were downed this time by Adam Newell’s goal.
Also in the Reserve Cup, Stamford Bridge hit seven first-half goals en route to an 8-0 win over Huby.
Matt Free scored a hat-trick while Ben Malthouse, Bobby Templeton, Shaun Skippen, Gareth Owen and Tony Downing were also on target.
Back in the Senior Cup, Alex Yates scored twice in Terrington Glory’s 3-0 premier division win at Aviva. Jordan Grose got their other goal.
