Football: First for club in Harbour Cup

LEALHOLM reached the semi-finals of the Scarborough & District FA Harbour Cup for the first time in their history by beating Ayton 4-2 in a great end-to-end cup tie.

This was Lealholm’s best performance since their Junior Cup victory at Gillamoor in early December.

Steve Roberts, the Ayton manager and former Pickering Town player, said his side had most of the play, but he was full of praise for the village set-up.

Lealholm lost star player Tom Raw to a knee injury but took the lead as Mike Thompson set up Sam Crooks.

Scarborough & District League first division side Ayton had edged the first half, though, and they levelled on 42 minutes through Chris McNeil.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Ben Crooks restored Lealholm’s lead.

Chris Stubbings equalised after good work by Alex Hamilton but Lealholm progressed with goals by Sam Crooks and Mark Thompson.

Lealholm will visit Filey Town in the semi-finals on March 30, when West Pier host the winners of Edgehill v Newlands Park.
