Angling: McNeil hauls in the carp for a Raker Lakes double win
3:08pm Wednesday 6th March 2013 in Sport
COLIN McNEIL took charge at Raker Lakes last week, winning both Westland’s AC’s Friday match and Sunday’s knock-up on the High Bank.
He got the ball rolling with a hefty 56lb from in-form peg 15. Using the tried and tested bomb and sweetcorn approach, he tempted five carp, before switching to margin pole and pellet to net a further half dozen carp to the 6lb mark.
Sunday saw him sitting at peg 20 and utilising margin pole and pellet tactics to take another all-carp haul of 32lb 14oz.
Norton’s Doug Featherstone drew peg 15 this time round and had to be content with 28lb 7oz and second place.
Brian Pallister was to the fore in the York Midweeker at Carp Vale Fishery last Wednesday, taking a catch of 35lb 6oz from peg 54 on the match lake.
Fishing the 16-metre pole tight across to the island with sweetcorn for bait, he took numerous carp with the odd trout thrown in for good measure.
Dennis Fish led the chasing pack with 24lb 12oz.
The Yacht Pond at Scarborough Mere suddenly sprung to life on Sunday, with Pete Bailey putting a very respectable 31lb 15oz of carp on the scales to win the latest round of the club's winter league. Rob Elwood took second place with 24lb 13oz, relegating Barry Penrose to third with 19lb 9oz.
Bill Newsome ran out a comfortable winner in Monday's Contemptibles match at Brooklands Lake, putting 16lb 1oz on the scales from peg 10. Opting for a waggler and maggot approach, he took a cracking ide of nearly 5lb plus a couple of 1lb 8oz skimmers and the usual small roach and rudd.
Weights dipped after this, leaving Ken Herbert trailing in second with 3lb 15oz at peg 16.
Malton & Norton Angling Club get their 2013 match programme underway this Sunday at Hundred Oaks Lake, Newton on Derwent. The draw takes place at 9am in the fishery car park and any member wishing to fish must book-on in advance by phoning Paul Thompson on 01653 618602.
