RESERVE Cup holders Wigginton Grasshoppers fell at the first hurdle in their defence of the York Minster Engineering Football League trophy as they lost 1-0 at Old Malton St Mary’s.
The Ryedale side, who were beaten by Wigginton in last season’s competition, won thanks to Adam Newell’s goal.
Reserve ‘C’ side Strensall, last season’s beaten finalists, picked up another reserve ‘A’ side scalp as they beat Haxby 3-2.
Strensall led through a Danny Morrison free-kick but Haxby responded with goals from Paul Holmes and Steve Martin before Strensall won it in the last five minutes thanks to Tom Wood and John Cooper.
Josh Molesworth snatched a late equaliser for reserve ‘C’ side Poppleton to send their tie with Pocklington, from reserve ‘B’, to penalties. Veteran ’keeper Jim Byword proved to be the hero as Pock failed to convert any of their spot-kicks.
Copmanthorpe were pushed all the way by reserve ‘C’ side Wilberfoss before edging into the next round with a 2-1 win. Jack Hugill and Mike Revey netted for Cop with Elliott Wrightson replying for ’Foss.
A left-foot screamer from Neil Ducey was the highlight of Dringhouses’ 3-0 win at Aviva. Mark Bellah and Jamie Barkway also netted.
Stamford Bridge hit seven first-half goals on the way to an 8-0 win over Huby. Matt Free scored a hat-trick and there were also goals for Ben Malthouse, Bobby Templeton, Shaun Skippen, Gareth Owen and Tony Downing.
Wheldrake will fly the flag for reserve ‘D’ after they beat Tadcaster Town 3-2. Twice James Smith gave Wheldrake the lead and, although Tadcaster twice produced an equaliser, James Walton headed an 88th-minute winner.
• The York Minster Engineering League will have vacancies next season for first teams and reserve teams.
