Hockey: Home comfort for Old Malton
2:40pm Wednesday 20th February 2013 in Sport
OLD Malton finally got to play back at their home ground at Pickering’s Northern Ryedale Leisure Centre for the first time since November, and beat Leeds Adel Carnegie 1-0.
Will Tindall got the goal early in the second half, striking home from a short corner, the result keeping them third in division one of the Yorkshire Men’s League.
Both sides created chances in the first 20 minutes, Malton’s clearest coming when John Owen drove down the right, beat three players, drew the ’keeper and slid the ball in front of an empty goal – no-one knocking it home.
Adel always looked like capable of nicking a goal but resolute defending, led by Aaron Coates assisted by improving youngsters Joe Barker and Alex Machin, kept them at bay.
The second half was six minutes old when Old Malton nerves were calmed.
Skipper Adam Freer was cut short in the ‘D’ at the end of a flowing move, with Tindall taking charge of the resulting short corner, his strong strike rattling the backboard.
Malton could not extend their lead as Adel defended determinedly, continuing to play well above their lowly position in the league. But the hosts closed the game out without dramas.
