Scarborough & District Football League round-up
2:44pm Wednesday 13th February 2013 in Sport
CHAMPIONS West Pier were beaten for the first time in almost two years in the Scarborough & District League as they fell 4-1 at home to Edgehill.
Pier went through last season unbeaten and had not been defeated this term either. But this result means they now trail division one leaders Filey by eight points, albeit with two games in hand.
Alex Coulson, Phil Waranett and Danny Collins put Edgehill clear at the break and Collins added his second in the second half. Sam Hyde got the consolation.
Filey Town doubled their lead at the top to six points after a superb performance brought a 3-2 win at Newlands Park.
Phil Dickens’ penalty put Filey ahead and, although Ben Luntley equalised, James Pinder and Dickens made it 3-1. Sean Exley pulled a goal back but Filey held on.
Second-placed Ayton fell 3-1 at Whitby Fishermen, who gave their best performance of the season. A Phil Raisbeck penalty and goals by Jordan Purvis and Neil Hart put the hosts clear. Steve Roberts replied but Ayton were well beaten.
Ryedale Sports Club enjoyed a 4-0 win at Seamer Sports thanks to second-half goals by Heath Brown, James Reed, Joe Turnbull and Adam Hornby.
In division two, Falsgrave closed the gap to leaders Snainton to three points, with two games in hand, after they beat Flixton 7-2 thanks to goals by Nick Ellis (3), Lee Drydale (2), Paul Brady and Richard Tolliday. Luke Chambers and Ian Laing scored for Flixton.
Edgehill Reserves rose to third after beating Rosette 3-2, Jason Prosser bagging a brace.
Neil Thomas hit a hat-trick as West Pier reserves won 4-1 at Whitby RUFC to leapfrog Sleights into top spot in division three.
• Edgehill have been drawn at home to West Pier in an all-Scarborough & District League semi-final in the North Riding County FA Saturday Challenge Cup. The tie will be played on March 2.
• In the East Riding County FA Junior Country Cup, Rillington Athletic paid for poor defending as they fell 7-0 at Leven Members Club. Heslerton lost on penalties to Wilberfoss after a goalless draw.
