Football: Old Malton St Mary’s re-find form

DEFENDING premier division champions Old Malton St Mary’s rediscovered their best form to trounce title-chasing Wigginton Grasshoppers 8-0 in the York Minster Engineering League.

The Ryedale side recorded their biggest away win since April 2008 thanks to hat-tricks from player-manager Darren Dunning and Tom Fenwick.

Fenwick, Dunning and Jon Newton scored in the first half, and St Mary’s hit top gear after the break as Fenwick and Dunning completed their trebles and Dean Nuttall also got on the scoresheet.

Grasshoppers remain second, five points behind leaders Dunnington, who were in York FA Saturday Senior Cup action, but now have played the same number of games. St Mary’s are in fifth.

Old Malton reserves avenged a 2-1 defeat at Copmanthorpe reserves by beating the same opposition by the identical score to chalk up their fourth straight home win in reserve ‘A’. Richard Stevenson and Luke Davis netted for Old Malton.
