Snooker: Bright Steels comeback in cup

BRIGHT Steels came from two frames down to win 3-2 at Malton Cons ‘B’ last week in the Malton, Norton & District League’s Hope & Anchor Trophy first round.

The hosts got off to a fine start as captain John Dyson saw off Geoff Foxton in a tight frame before Jordan Coulthard potted well to win handsomely against Eric Burley.

However, the Steelmen’s John Snowden made his 47 handicap start count against Dave Coulthard. The Malton man came back well with a 24 break but Snowden hung in and potted a fantastic blue to win the frame.

The Steelmen were then level when Mal Piercy held his game together to beat Andrew Sherry.

Louis Burdett completed the comeback when beating Danny Williamson in the decider. It was a close affair but the game turned Burdett’s way when he escaped a snooker before potting the blue and dispatching an easy pink.

League leaders Malton Cons ‘C’ proved too strong for Pickering Cons ‘C’ with a 4-1 home victory to progress.

Romane Reeves potted blue and pink to beat Dave Dawson in a tight frame with many chances missed.

Pickering levelled as captain Geoff Walker outgunned Dominic Spiteri, but Malton retook the lead as Phil Hart, whose game has improved as the season has gone along, edged out Ken Davison.

Hart clawed back his handicap deficit but Davison should have won when missing a cut-able pink into the middle. Hart duly potted the last two balls.

Pickering’s Pete Skaife fancied his chances with a 22-point start against Chris Brigham, but Brigham began the better, bringing back the deficit. It was then nip and tuck until the Malton player potted the pink to seal the match.

Roger Ward then saw off Greg Gorman despite the latter’s 47 handicap.

No result was forthcoming from the tie between Pickering ‘D’ and ‘A’.

Semi-final draw: Malton Cons ‘A’ v Malton Cons ‘C’, Bright Steels v Pickering ‘D’ or ‘A’. Ties to be played on Monday, February 18.
