Simon Dyson’s back in the groove on European Tour return

First published in Sport

NORTH Yorkshire golfer Simon Dyson’s return to the European Tour was solid if not spectacular as he finished joint-52nd in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

The world number 71 finished the tournament at his consistent best, overcoming two early bogeys to card a one under par round of 71 for a level par total.

In finishing alongside Thomas Bjorn, Paul Lawrie and Ricardo Gonzalez, Dyson pocketed 7,677 euros.

That was some way short of the 336,000-euro prize sealed by winner Jamie Donaldson, who edged out Justin Rose by a stroke on 14 under par at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

York-born Dyson bogeyed the second and third holes of his final round, but then embarked on a faultless 15 holes.

A dozen pars were augmented by birdies at the fifth, eighth and 13th.

The previous day, Malton & Norton Golf Club ace Dyson dropped six spots on the leaderboard after adding a level par third round 72 to his opening rounds of 75 and 70.

A bogey at the par four third hole was cancelled out with a birdie four at the eighth, but another shot went astray at the ninth.

The 35-year-old’s up and down round was back on the level with another birdie at the par five tenth.

A dropped shot at the 14th was evened out by a final birdie at the par four 17th, leaving him one over par for the tournament, his first of the new season.
