Rugby Union: Malton & Norton 2nds fall at Otley
7:20am Wednesday 16th January 2013 in Sport
Centres Ben Martin and Chris Lewis made good ground and released winger Scott Kneeshaw to score the first try, Nipper Wainwright goaling.
However, Otley, using their heavier pack, crossed twice before half-time for a 17-7 lead.
The teams traded a penalty goal each before Otley crossed again, despite the hard work of Malt forwards David Cole, Tom Parsons, Jody Stead and Will and Ben Pearce.
The visitors fought back and, although a surge for the line was stopped short, scrum-half Wainwright spotted a gap and crashed over.
The physical effort took its toll on Malt as they had no subs and were reduced to 14 men when Marc Sleightholme had to leave the field, while Ben Martin was reduced to hobbling. But it was they who were pressing late on.
Meanwhile, illness in the ranks meant Malton & Norton 3rds arrived at Beverley Bandits with only 13 players. They borrowed one from the hosts and lost 32-12 in a fine game.
Beverley scored three tries in the first half, despite tenacious tackling and impressive displays from veteran Marcus Lyon, Paul Walker at 10 and centres Simon Massey and MacFall, while Jack Cranage at full-back used his pace whenever he could.
Malt started the second half brightly and, after excellent work by the forwards with Marcus Christopherson and Jamie Stansfield tackling their hearts out, Massey burst over and Walker converted. Beverley elected to kick their next two penalties as Malt started to dominate, with number eight Will Smith taking a lovely pass from skipper Dave MacDowell to reduce the deficit.
Tony Watson and Adam Hall also began to make ground from sharp breaks and more scores looked likely.
However, a late breakaway gave Beverley a try, despite claims of a forward pass, to seal a flattering win.
