7:20am Wednesday 16th January 2013 in Sport
THE Contemptibles paid their first visit of the year to Brooklands Lake on Monday last week and found the fish in an obliging mood.
Bill Newsome drew peg one and opted for a waggler and maggot approach, taking roach and rudd to 6oz apiece, but it was a carp of just over 8lb that swung the verdict his way, boosting his final tally to 18lb 8oz.
Brian Hewitt secured second place from peg seven with 12lb 1oz of silver fish.
Colin McNeil was to the fore in G B Angling Club’s match on the middle lake at Westland’s Fishery last Tuesday, weighing in with 28lb 10oz.
Kicking off on the ground bait feeder and maggot at peg 34, he took a 5lb carp and three skimmers before switching to the margin pole with pellet to grab 15 stock carp. Phil Roberts was second off peg 28 with 22lb.
A carp of 10lb put Roger Holmes on course for a win at Forest Lane Fishery, Alne, in the York Midweek match last Wednesday. Utilising a maggot feeder at peg 34, he also took around 20lb of silver fish to end the day with 30lb 1oz.
Ray Wright was a distant second off peg 17 with 13lb 4oz.
Carp were conspicuous by their absence on the Horseshoe at Raker Lakes when Westland’s AC paid a visit last Friday.
Alan Creaser led the way from peg 21, taking a chub on the 16- metre pole with maggot plus Mick Mathews was second with a catch of 9lb 10oz from peg 18.
