Snooker: Malton's Simon Weatherill right on cue

SIIMON WEATHERILL was by far the star of the night as the Malton, Norton & District League resumed after the festive break – as he forged a superb break of 110 in the pairs frame to earn Malton Cons ‘C’ a 3-3 draw against their ‘B’ team.

There had been earlier breaks of 24 by Andy Sherry and 23 by Steve Turner, but Weatherill’s effort had the hushed room in awe.

He took 13 reds with colours – with the best pot coming on the green into a middle bag to gain position on the brown as he cleaned up the table, as he set the highest break of the season, eclipsing his 72 of earlier in the season.

Unbeaten leaders Malton Cons ‘A’ needed to win the pairs frame to avoid defeat at home to Bright Steels.

The hosts had taken an early lead with Dan Pawson defeating Mal Piercy 47-38 and the unbeaten Steve Beal coming back from 20 behind to beat Dave Burdett on the black.

But the visitors hit back as John Snowden defeated Bob Newton 69-64 on the black as Newton went in off, Geoff Foxton beat Steve Pawson 58- 35 and Ernie Burley beat John Ruston 66-30. Peter Woodall and Barry Elener levelled the match against Foxton and Snowden.

Pickering Cons ‘C’ also drew 3-3 with their ‘D’ team in a match that had three black ball games – Chris Leonard edging Andy Porter 52-47, Andy Porter beating Dave Dawson 78-71 and Alan Rudgard beating John Lay 58-52. Ken Davison had a 20 break and Porter a 39 in the pairs.

League chairman Don McFarlane is to stand down at the end of the season.
