Entertaining encounter for Malton & Norton third team

Malton & Norton third string got the new year off to a entertaining if controversial start in a 27-23 defeat at Nestlé Rowntree.

From a tap penalty, skipper Dave MacDowell off-loaded to winger Jack Cranage to put Malt ahead.

Two Nestlé tries sandwiched a Matty Williams penalty from half-way but Malton full-back Adam’s try-saving tackle denied the York side another score and MacDowell crashed over at the other end for a 13-10 half-time lead.

Two quick tries saw Nestlé surge 22-13 ahead but Malt rallied and persistent Nestlé infringements saw centre Rob Macfall score and Williams convert.

Nestlé hit back with what turned out to be a decisive try, going the full length of the pitch, after which Malt pounded the line looking for victory.

Williams chipped over the defence and scored a fine solo try – only for the referee to instead award Malton a penalty for offside.

Williams took the three points on offer but further pressure did not bring a winner.
