Jayson Cavill led home a 10-strong Pickering Running Club turnout among more than 250 competitors in the New Year’s Day Fell Race up and down Captain Cook’s Monument.
The five-mile race includes 900 feet of ascent and the in-form Cavill enjoyed the fine weather to produce an eighth-placed finish in 35 minutes 12 seconds.
There was a battle royale between clubmates Andy Mitchell and Bob Horsman.
Mitchell had started the faster but Horsman fought through the field to join him. The pair sprinted breast to breast through Great Ayton before Horsman just gained the edge at the finish.
Both were timed at 43-09 and needed a long rest to recover.
Mike Wilson had an impressive return to form, his 44-39 earning him 12th in category.
Richard Todd clocked the same time, while Mike Hetherton won the men’s veterans category. Benefitting from his recent retirement from work, Hetherton ran well for 45-24.
Graham Harrison cruised around in 49-31.
The Pickering women’s team was made up of Lockton and Levisham residents. Kim England led her fellow villagers home in 45-18 for fifth in category.
Sarah Sissons ran strongly to gain 11th in category in 49-30, and Sue Slack completed the point-scoring with a good third in category in 52-50, which meant the ladies came fourth in the overall team event to stay top of the series table.
