Darts:Rich Corner cleans up

York darts supremo Rich Corner was on sparkling form as he won two local tournaments, writes Jamie Presland.

‘The Gent’ was triumphant in stage two of the Yorkshire Masters Darts Open, beating Wakefield’s Jaron Esteve in the final, and then followed up with the York Darts Leagues Players Championship.

Corner edged his semi-final clash with Nottingham’s Matt Padgett 3-1, his opponent missing single dart finishes twice, before beating Esteve 4-2 in the final. The win sees him qualify for the Grand Finals at Huntington WMC in January.

York’s other representative, John Quantock, made the semi-finals before going down 3-2 to Esteve.

Stage three takes place today at Starbeck WMC in Harrogate.

Corner plays for The Punch Bowl in York, and has been the top seeded York Darts Promotions player for the last two years. He is also a member of Cleveland county’s ‘A’ team, and plays Superleague for Thirsk.

The 50-year-old won the Players Championship men’s individual title.

He defeated fellow York player Quantock 3-2 in a tight semi-final before blowing away reigning champion Lutz Leutzsch 4-1 in the final to pick up the £100 prize.

In the women’s event, Mandy Baker and partner Cindy Roberts contested the final, with Baker coming out on top to claim the £50 award. The pair had earlier overcome Chez Fairclough and Denise Fowler in the semi-finals.
