Football: Neil Thomas puts West Pier on top
9:00am Wednesday 24th October 2012 in Sport
LATE glee put Scarborough & District League first division champions West Pier back on top of the table after a 1-0 win over previous leaders Ayton.
The only goal of a tight game arrived in stoppage time courtesy of Pier’s Neil Thomas.
Filey Town are third after a 3-1 win at Westover Wasps. Ben Briggs headed Filey ahead and James Pinder added a second before Tom McKenzie-Fenwick pulled a goal back. Phil Dickens sealed the win.
Fourth-placed Ryedale Sports Club were given a five-goal drubbing at home by next-to-bottom Edgehill. Alex Bowman put Edgehill ahead midway before Aaron Jenking hit four goals. The score would have been greater but for some outstanding goalkeeping by Ryedale’s Rob Campbell.
Whitby Fishermen beat Eastfield Sports 5-2 with goals by Sam Bailey (2), Jordan Purvis, Peter Scaife and Neil Hart. Danny Price and Nick Hegarty responded.
Hunmanby United and Fishburn Park Reserves drew 1-1.
In division two, Richard Malthouse put Rillington Athletic ahead at Filey Town Reserves but Lalan Flynn (2), Scott Sheldon, Dave Wedge and Joe Gage gave the hosts an easy win.
A Keith Skelton brace could not prevent Flixton losing 3-2 to an impressive Rosette whose goals were scored by Jamie Wray, Prince Amponsah and Ali Wray.
Josh Sands gave Snainton a 1-0 win at Newlands Park Reserves, scoring after good work by Leigh Watson. It came after Snainton’s Karl Cooper had missed a penalty.
