DENBY Dale draughtsman and sculptor Jamie Frost is showing a selection of drawings at the Back o’ The Shop Gallery and Café in Main Street, Terrington.

Following on from his exhibition at Newby Hall near Ripon, Jamie has brought his work to Ryedale for his only other show this year.

Born in Huddersfield, he studied fine art and sculpture at Loughborough University, and in late-2006 he co-founded Dab Hand Studios in an old textile mill in Denby Dale.

Working predominantly as a sculptor, Jamie uses wood as his main material, creating pieces that often lead to other art forms such as video and performance, and he also produces figurative drawings of his subjects.

His creative decisions invariably are influenced by practical issues. Jamie has had regular access to the life model since 2006, and gradually has been seduced by the crafted element of his work.

Inevitably this has resulted in his realistic depiction after years of abstracting the figure.

His sculptures are accompanied by large ballpoint pen drawings, a media that shares the semi-permanence of wood as it fades over time.

Now the subject of the Terrington show, these drawings explore the forms and qualities of the wood that he uses later.

“As carving cannot be undone, so Biro lines cannot be removed,” says Jamie.

The exhibition will run until August 29; opening times are 10am until 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
