Our readers give their views on Ryedale MP's vote I agree with last week’s correspondent, Judith Scott, that Anne Macintosh, the most effective MP we have had in this constituency in my (long) lifetime, is much missed

What we need is a banning of all through traffic on Castlegate The North Yorkshire County Council project to worsen air pollution in the Air Quality Management Area on Castlegate hides the full terrible impact by giving the seemingly good news first (right filter at Butcher Corner), and then completely undoing any benefit for residents by forcing all south bound traffic to go along Castlegate only to be forced to wait along its full length, not just twice an hour when the train comes, but ALL the time. This will make life hell for residents, and I have already heard of one resident say there will be direct action if this goes ahead, and I for one would absolutely support residents in such a move, as their voices have been completely ignored. Sugar coating it with much overdue pedestrian crossings only highlights the short-sightedness as a valuable opportunity to overhaul the central dominance of the car in our towns is missed. What we need is a banning of all through traffic on Castlegate, except emergency vehicles, cycles, e-scooters, and 2 way traffic on Norton Rd/Blackboards, so motor vehicles have somewhere to go which has a much lower air pollution problem and impact. Only then could a much needed lights crossing with pedestrian and cycle phases lead to a transformation in Malton in BOTH active travel (walking and cycling) and air pollution for residents, as people can walk and cycle up Castlegate and people living there can get their lives, and fresh air, back, fresh air that residents elsewhere in our towns and villages take for granted. A rising bollard either end of County Bridge could retain access for emergency services, access to Morrisons and residents available via 2 way access from the north of Castlegate and Railway Street, as happens perfectly well whenever there are floods that close County Bridge.
