FOR a taste of what happened on the home front during the second World War, head to Goathland Station where there will be plenty of events throughout the weekend.

On Friday morning, evacuees from Pickering will arrive at 10.50am and depart again on the 11.50 train.

Throughout the weekend, in true Dad’s Army style, Pontefract Home Guard will be guarding the station and there will be various scenarios including capturing a German spy, air raids and an ammunition train incident, plus a simulated incoming freight fire with the Home Guard forming a fire crew to fight it.

Other Home Front displays include a vegetable garden and wash day, children at play with games of the era featuring the junior volunteers, and a ‘make do and mend’ demonstration in the front room of Goathland Station House.

There are also exhibits of weaponry, including an RAF regiment historical flight Smith turret gun and 80cm searchlight, Shire horses and agricultural implements provided by David Hesketh, and the North East Military Vehicle Club will display vehicles and supply a soup kitchen.

The RAF Regiment Historical Flight will also be working alongside the NYMR Government Stores Train to convert wagons into an ambulance train.

Meanwhile Dickie Lines will provide entertainment with upbeat songs and tunes from the wartime era.

The village of Goathland is also getting involved this year, with various re-enactors scattered throughout enjoying Bombardier and Spitfire beer dispensed from Goathland Hotel, plus there’s an armaments display outside Goathland Garage.
