A MALTON man serving in the Royal Navy, Ronald Dowson, played for England, who beat Scotland 3-1 in the Services soccer international at Gilbertson Park, Berwick.

He was a well-known player for Malton Bible Class and brother to two other Bible Class players, James Dowson, a prisoner of war in Italy, and William Dowson, of Malton.

 

• UNDER the auspices of the Ryedale Groups of the Women’s Institutes, Madame Dahlin, of Russia, gave a very graphic account of ‘Life in Russia’ in the Church House, Kirkbymoorside.

Madame Dahlin, in a lecture, described many sad and pitiful stories of how the people in her country were enduring hardships and ordeals in their struggle for freedom. The lecture was attended by a good company.

 

• A POTATO picking camp was open at Castle Howard on Tuesday for pupils of Malton Grammar School.

Twenty-two pupils are taking part and are picking potatoes in the park, which is being farmed by the War Agricultural Executive Committee.

They are accommodated in an unoccupied farmhouse. The camp is under the supervision of the headmaster, Mr T A Williams, and members of the staff. Cooking is being done by Miss Lowe, domestic science mistress, and Miss Frankland, gymnastic mistress.

 

• NO trace has been found of Lady Diana Worthington, 38-year-old daughter of the second Earl of Feversham and sister of the present Earl.

Letters left by Lady Diana have caused relatives to fear for her safety. She disappeared from her home early on Tuesday.
