THE Slingsby School Children have taken a most enthusiastic interest in the book salvage drive which has taken place in Slingsby during the past week, having collected 700 books and 496 magazines. Mrs Brown, headmistress, is complemented on this splendid effort.

 

• NINETY years old and three times a widow is a record not easily broken, and still enjoying the good health so often envied in the evening of life. This is Mrs Mary Elizabeth Crosby’s good fortune and at her recent 90th birthday party she was wished “many happy returns”.

 

• IS Malton Urban Council out of touch with opinion in the town? Judged by its attitude on star-lighting it would appear to be.

Its refusal to adopt this modified system of street lighting, known to be safe, officially sanctioned and designed to take some of the irritation out of a blackout which must be continued, is failing to get understood by the town’s people.

Norton Urban Council has taken a wiser approach to the matter by accepting the offer of the gas company to demonstrate this lighting by providing six months for one month of free cost.

 

• AT a meeting held at the Cave, Middlecave Road, Malton, on Sunday, it was decided to revive the Malton Canine Society and it was arranged to have the first show on November 20.

Meanwhile, at a meeting held on Monday night in Champly Room, Pickering, it was decided to form a Fancier’s Association for Pickering and district.

 

• NATIONAL Fire Services crews from Malton, Pickering, Huntington, Scarborough, Easingwold and Kirkbymoorside were engaged for three days in fighting a fire which broke out on the farm of Mr R F Barker at Foston.

The alarm was raised by neighbours and within a short time the whole stackyard was ablaze.

Before the arrival of the NFS, good work was done by neighbours and others.

The damage is estimated at £2,500. The cause of the outbreak is not known.
