A CHARITY shop is turning the clock back to the 1940s in time for the annual Railway in Wartime Weekend, organised by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Staff at Age UK in Kirkbymoorside have a stack of period-style clothes, shoes and handbags to go on sale in time for the 1940s spectacular.

Manager Carol Holtby said this was the 10th year they had held the event.

“As soon as one event finishes we start collecting again for next year,” she said.

“The take-up is amazing with people coming from near and far.”

She added: “The customers are delighted with the array of things, from suitcases and bags to hats and coats.”

The Railway in Wartime event takes place from Friday, October 12, to Sunday, October 14, and this year celebrates its 20th anniversary.

As usual, tens of thousands of visitors are expected to descend on Pickering and take in the events at the stations all the way along the line to Whitby, where at each station there are re-enactors, music, dancing, exhibitions, demonstrations and much more, while foot and vehicle parades in Pickering bring the town to life, 1940s style.

Thousands of people get into the spirit by getting dressed up in period costumes, including civilians, military and land girls.

This year, the event extends to Pickering Showground where there are evening dances, trade stalls, catering facilities, battle re-enactments, vehicle displays, Spitfire simulators, entertainers and more, plus a park and ride transporting visitors from the showground into Pickering.
