'WHAT a fantastic weekend' was the verdict of all those involved with the Railway in Wartime event.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) turned back the clocks to World War Two at Pickering, Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont stations with re-enactors, visitors and staff getting involved in the annual weekend which aims to entertain and educate while also remembering the service railway men and women that lost their lives during the conflict.

Danielle Ramsey , NYMR marketing manager, said the Railway in Wartime event brought £1million into the local economy which was a fantastic boost to North Yorkshire and saw daily ticket sales increase by 5%.

"We do listen to feedback from our visitors, re-enactors, volunteers and traders and we aim each year to make the event even more enjoyable and safer so we can continue running this fantastic event year after year," she added.

"To do this we do need the support of local businesses in terms of helping fund the event as we are a registered charity and to take part in setting the scene for visitors. "

Danielle said it had been great to see more local shops getting involved this year as the NYMR ran the first Railway in Wartime Window Display competition, which was judged by Mayor of Pickering Councillor Joy Andrews and Andrew Mead NYMR PLC chairman.

"The competition was won by Bothams in Pickering, and a massive thank you to all the business that took part, the town looked fantastic," she added.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend with more people travelling from Whitby into the Moors, the steam trains running to time, and the fantastic weather which was the icing on the cake.

Danielle said: "We look forward to welcoming everyone back once again to the Railway in Wartime event next year which will take place on October 16 – 18 2015.”
