History Group - The last Tea & Chat session of the 2017/18 season will be at 2pm on April 9. This is a change of date because of the clash with Easter Monday. A new rolling slide show will be projected.

Village hall - Easter Monday teas will be served in the village hall on Monday, April 2 from 3.30pm until 5.30pm at a charge of £5 per head. There will be other entertainment, including a raffle.

Tree planting - There will be an opportunity to join in tree planting at the playing field on Saturday, April 7, from 10am to noon. It is a chance to and plant a tree to commemorate or celebrate people, pets or events. Refreshments available. It is to raise funds to revitalise the playing field and improve the environmental.

Celebration - There will be a celebration of the life of Barrie Acornley on Sunday, April 22, at 12.30pm, at the Moors Inn.

AYTON

Craft fair - There will be a craft fair in the village hall, Wilsons Lane, East Ayton, on Easter Monday, April 2, from 10am to 3pm. Tables cost £10. To reserve a table, phone Joy Tomlinson on 01723 862170.

On film - The jubilee committee is hosting an evening of old films of the area in the village hall, courtesy of Yorkshire Film Archives, on Thursday, April 12, at 7pm. Entry £3. Refreshments available.

BULMER

Bridge Club - Julie Cowdy and Judith Bray were the winners of the meeting on March 22 with 60.4 per cent. Second were Emma Elwess and Liz Cundill on 59.6 per cent.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church at the Crown Inn on Sunday, April 1 at 8.30pm. Entry is £2 and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at the Crown. Phone 01751 417343.

History Group - Kirkbymoorside History Group has sent out copies of its latest newsletter as an email attachment to everyone who is on its mailing list. Coffee morning - All proceeds from a coffee morning with stalls in the Methodists Church between 9.30am and 11.30am on Wednesday, 11 April will go towards the Shoebox Appeal.

AGM - Kirkbymoorside Allotment Association’s annual general meeting was attended by 26 members. Annual subscriptions were taken by Mrs J Lishman and retiring chairman Carol Messham gave her report. Mr J Farrow was thanked for his work at the allotment over many years. Mr S Lonsdale was awarded the Nobel Lishman Shield for his work ordering the seeds. The new chairman is Mrs T Mirams. Picture puzzle - Herbert Read, the Kirkbymoorside author, is the subject of a display at Pickering Library which includes many books he wrote. It is one of two ongoing projects by the Kirkdale and Herbert Read Group. A local resident has also asked the group to find out more about 1939 evacuees photographed at the bus shelter at Nawton, Beadlam, with the caption ‘waiting for the key’. Anyone who can help should see John Dean at the stall in the Memorial Hall on Wednesdays or phone 01439 771639.

Messy Church - Youngsters made Easter gardens, cards, Holy Week calendars and decorating hard boiled eggs. Sara Paxton led songs, Steve Helm did an Easter timeline and Liz Bartrop gave a presentation from Psalms. The shared meal included egg sandwiches and chocolate nests. The next Messy Church will be on Monday, April 16.

Give or take - A Give or Take Day will be held in the Memorial Hall on Sunday, April 8 from 9am to noon. Goods may be delivered the day before between 6pm and 8pm and from 8am onwards on the Sunday.

Entertainer – Dave Lesley will be performing at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday at 8.30pm.

Plastic reduction - The Environment Group has produced little 50-page shopping-list pads which remind people to take less plastic home when they go shopping. They are available, at £1 each, from The Moorside Store and Summit Bakery.

Tuesday Group - The meeting in the Methodist Jubilee room at 7.30pm on Tuesday, April 10 will be a musical evening with the Rev Norma Davey. The leader is Jean and the tea hostesses are Gillian and Julia.

Sturdy Court - The next domino drive at the centre is on Monday, April 9 at 7.30pm.

Prayer meeting - The Julian Prayer Group will meet on Tuesday, April 10 at 6.30pm in St Chad’s Church.

Bridge club - At the latest game North/South winners were Anne Avery and George Goodall with 70 per cent. Valarie Hawkes, playing her first game at the club, partnered by Jane Baldwin were runners-up with 57 per cent. Bo and Tony Simpson came top at East/West with 59 per cent. Peter Small and Bryan Wilson were second on 55 per cent. Play of the week went to Christine Brett and Clarissa Napier.

Easter services - An Easter Vigil and the Lighting of New Fire will take place on Saturday at St John the Baptist Church, Pockley. Easter Sunday services on April 1 include 11am Choral Eucharist at St Gregory’s and 9.30am Eucharist at St Hilda’s. There will be a said Evening song service at St Gregory’s on Sunday, April 8.

LASTINGHAM

Flower Club - Eileen Barraclough gave a presentation called Flowers Are My Passion at the March meeting of Malton and District Flower Club. Bridge club - Alan Butterworth and Michael Wright were the winners in the latest round of Malton Bridge Club’s handicap pairs with 58.8 per cent. In second place were Mike Jackson and Robin Ashdown with 57.6 per cent followed by Bryan Hone and Richard Hazlerigg with 56.6 per cent. Last Thursday the North-South winners were Tim Johnson and Enid Nagton ahead of Robin Ashdown and John Bramall, while Ruth Mattingly and Sally Beswick won at East-West followed by Carole Dixon and Caroline Peall-Clegg.

MARTON AND NORMANBY

Easter family day - There will be an Easter Day family special on Sunday starting at 4pm at St Andrew`s Church with tea with egg, marmalade sandwiches, egg nests and cakes. There will be a cross to decorate with flowers and a possible visit by Paddington. It will finish with a short service, including a story about Jeremy’s Easter egg.

NAWTON Spring clean - Easter Monday activities begin on April 2 with village spring clean at 10am. Anyone taking part should take gloves, black bin bags, strong brushes, wheelbarrows and spades to help with the tidy up. At 10.30am there will be the start of the grand potato challenge with people able to collect their potato from the pavilion. The potatoes can be grown in any compost or soil until the summer family fun day on Sunday, July 15 when the potato weigh-in will be held.

Bingo - There will be a prize bingo in the village hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, April 7.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Craft and chat - There will be a craft and chat meeting in the village hall on Thursday, April 5 at 7pm. Admission is £2, which includes tea or coffee and biscuits.

NORTON

Easter services - The following Easter services will be held at Bethel Methodist Church. On Easter Sunday (April Communion at 8am will be led by the Rev Tanya Short. At 10.45am family worship will be led by Linda Stannard and at 6pm the Easter evening celebration will be led by Helen Leng from Ebberston.

NUNNINGTON

PICKERING

Library - People have a chance to win a family ticket for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Photograph yourself next to one of Ryedale’s historical landmarks and drop the photo into the library by Monday, April 30. There are two age groups for the competition under 18 and over 18. All photos will be displayed in the library throughout May. There will an Easter egg hunt in the library for children aged four to 11 from Monday, April 9 to Saturday, April 14.

Bridge club - The latest session was won by Graeme Matthew and John Bramall with 63.19 per cent. In second place were George Goodall and Anne Avery with 60.42 per cent. Christine Brett and Pat Hainsworth scored 54.86 per cent for third place.

Fish quiz - Ryedale Aquarist Society met at the home of Sue and David Marshall last week. Members Norma and Ian Mitchell put together a fish and fun quiz that was won by Sue Marshall. The next meeting will be held at the home of Steve Russell at 7.30pm on Wednesday, April 4 when a discussion will take place on how to prepare fish exhibits for an open show.

Fleamarket - The fleamarket in the Liberal Club, Smiddy Hill, starts its 2018 programme of openings during Easter. It will be open from Good Friday to Easter Monday, April 2 from 10am to 4pm daily.

PEEMS - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society on at 7pm on Wednesday, April 4 at the RVS Hall, Hungate.

Domino drive - Pickering Cricket Club will hold a domino drive at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Thursday, April 5 at 7.30pm.

Dialect evening - Adam Collier is hosting a Yorkshire Dialect evening in the Memorial Hall on April 21 at 7pm. The event is in aid of Pickering Horticultural Society. Super draw - Arthur Champkins won £450 with the numbers were 40, 22 and 13 in Pickering Town FC’s Super Draw. This week’s draw will be for £75.

Quiz night - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday at 7.30pm.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Seven teams playing for £54 in prize money took part in Jennie’s quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 53 points were Team @ the Bar, after a tie break Mike Fiona and Col were second (49) and third were Sue’s Crew (49). Jennie’s next quiz in the Fleece will be on Friday, April 6. Her Sunday night quiz was won by Honeymooners.

Keep tidy - Sixteen volunteers took part in the Love Where You Live action morning and collected 33 sacks of rubbish from around the village.

Exhibition - The third Annual Buckrose Community Café local arts and handicrafts exhibition will be held in the church rooms and village hall from 10am to 5.30pm on Saturday, May 12. This is an opportunity for amateurs of any age and skill to exhibit their art work, ceramics or handicrafts of any form for 50p per entry. SEAMER

St Martin’s - The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, presided and preached at the 9.30 service of Holy Communion for Palm Sunday. Andrew looked at the Palm Sunday procession and asked how the congregation would respond to the events, if they had been there. Dot Francis and Gisa Moore were sidespersons, Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano and Janet Lamb and Elizabeth Chapman served refreshments. The Rev Moreland presided and preached again at the 11am modern service. Elizabeth Moreland read and assisted with the chalice, and Chris Bray led the intercessions. The sung worship was led by Richard Fuller with Chloe Proctor and John Taylor. Jenny Bland and Jean Donovan ran the children’s Sunday Club. Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service. The Easter services in the area are; Easter Day at St Martin’s 9.30am Holy Communion with children’s activities and 11am modern Communion service with Sunday Club.

Methodists - The Palm Sunday service was taken by Rev Graham Morgan. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Allan Dunnington and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the offering. The Bible reading was given by Jan Blower, who read from Mark’s gospel. In his sermon the Rev Morgan said that Jesus’s life was a journey - the end of the journey being the ride into Jerusalem and the cross. During the service, palm crosses were distributed to the congregation. The service on Sunday will begin at 10am, and not at the usual time 10.30am, and will follow the Holy Communion breakfast.

SHERBURN

Community club - There was another full house at the Community & Sports Club bingo which saw £560 paid out in prize money. The last bingo before the summer break is on Saturday, April 21. The band Over The Limit will be performing at the club on Saturday from 9pm. There will be a late bar and a raffle.

St Hilda’s Church - The Rev Joe Kinsella officiated at the Holy Communion service with Barbara Grice assisting with the chalice. The preacher was Mike Dixon, who took as his theme “What’s It All About”, starting with a short quiz about the song, originally sung by Cilla Black, then relating it to the story of Jesus telling the disciples what was to happen to him. Betty Flinton read the lesson from Psalm 118 and the sidespeople were Keith and Jean Usher, who also served coffee at the close of the service. There will be a service of Reflection on Good Friday at 2pm. The morning worship on Sunday, April 8 starting at 10.30am will be led by Barbara Grice. On Sunday, April 15 there will be a joint service with members of the Methodist Church at 10.30am. The preacher will be the Rev Dr Kevin Ridd and at the close of the service people will be invited to stay for soup and pudding. The service on Sunday, April 22 will be a confirmation service conducted by the Bishop of Selby at 10am. Refreshments will be served in the village hall after the service.

Letters draw - J Entwistle won £135 in Sherburn FC’s letter draw on Saturday with the letters J, M and O. This week’s prize will be for £45.

Luncheon club - Members enjoyed a chicken dinner cooked and served by Sandra and her team of helpers. Birthday greetings were sung to Rosemary, Pat and Jean. The next luncheon club will be held on Wednesday, April 18 when the speaker will be Lesley Usher, who will also receive the cheque raised at the coffee morning for the circuit breakfast for the homeless held at Westborough Methodist Church. Methodist news - The coffee morning hostess was Liz Aconley and Liz, John and Graham set out the tables ready for Luncheon Club the following day. The Palm Sunday Holy Communion service was led by the Rev Dr Kevin Ridd. The Lenten Liturgy was read, and Evie placed the palm branches on the road to the cross. The organist was Chris Cade and the guitarist was Robin Magowan. The audio-visual equipment was operated by Liz Aconley. After worship refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The Easter Sunday celebrations at 10.30am will be led by Diane Robinson.

SINNINGTON

Food bank talk - Sinnington People’s Guild welcomed John MacKenzie to the meeting on Tuesday, March 20. He spoke about the work of the Ryedale food banks, explaining the referral and voucher systems and how people can be directed to other sources of help. Without Government aid, the food banks are reliant on the donations of food and money from the public through churches and other organisations. When started, it was anticipated the need would be for three years, but the need has increased countrywide and especially in Yorkshire. Many questions were asked as tea and biscuits were served. The next, and final meeting of the season, is a musical evening with the White Rose Male Voice Praise on Tuesday, April 3 at 7.15pm. Supper will be served and a collection will be taken for guild funds.

SNAINTON

Concert result - The recent EASY Band concert featuring musicians from the Scarborough Music Centre, which played to a full house, raised £580 towards the upkeep of the village hall.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Easter events - On Easter Day (Sunday) at 10am there will be a short service on the village green followed by a service and Holy Communion in the Methodist Church and at 11am a sung Communion at All Saints. Easter continues with an evening of Easter favourite hymns and readings in the Methodist Church on Friday, April 13 at 7pm led by Thornton-le-Dale Friends. A collection will be taken for church funds. Light refreshments will be served at the close.

Bridge Club - The competition held on Monday, March 19 was won by Mary Mortonson and Lynda Lockwood with 66.7 per cent. In second place were Anthony and Moira Brown with 58.7 per cent.

WOMBLETON

Quiz -There will be a quiz in the village hall on Friday, April 6 at 7.30pm to raise money to buy new chairs for the hall. It is for teams of no more than four people and costs £3, which includes supper, per person to enter. Quizzers can take their own drinks. Domino drive - A domino drive will be held in the village hall on Saturday at 7.30pm. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits. All are welcome. There will be another domino drive on Wednesday, April 4.

WI REPORTS

Helmsley - The Helmsley branch of the WI held its monthly meeting on Thursday, March 22 at the headquarters of the North York Moors National Park Authority. The president, Val Arnold, was unable to attend and in her absence Chris Small welcomed 20 members and one visitor. Zena Lister read the minutes of February’s meeting and the secretary, Helen Robinson, gave out various notices and information. Mrs Small read out a letter from regional headquarters congratulating the branch on an excellent annual report by the secretary and the annual financial report from the branch’s treasurer, Mavis Holmes. Pam Towler, known to many because of her family’s long-established chemist shop in Kirkbymoorside, gave an illustrated talk on the history of plants in medicine, showing how essential plants were in medicine throughout history and the extent to which they play a significant part in medicine today. The competition for a pill box was won by Paddy Clough. The next meeting will be on Thursday, April 26 at 7.30pm when Gill Boag-Munroe will talk about Associated Countrywomen of the World. New members are welcome.

Sinnington - The speaker for March was unable to attend so members watched a film of an interview of their late friend Molly, who had been a member for more than 50 years. President Helen then set members a quiz. The next meeting will be on Thursday, April 12 when Rebecca Tucker will give a talk about Whitby Jet.

YCA REPORT

Wombleton - The meeting held on Tuesday, March 20 began with Mrs J Gamble welcoming 23 members and one guest. The minutes of the February meeting were read and approved. A list was circulated for members to write their suggestions for next year’s programme which will hopefully be ready towards the end of this year. The evening continued with members sharing their favourite recipes alongside samples to taste. It was a good opportunity to get to know each other while enjoying the great variety of sweet and savoury food along with a cup of tea or coffee served by the hostesses of the evening.
