APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Village hall - The village hall management committee held a meeting last Wednesday when it was agreed that two picnic tables and a bench will be purchased and installed in front of the hall. The issue of large water bills now appears to have been resolved but the situation will be monitored. A new external light will be installed to illuminate the key pad of the defibrillation unit. Two new notices are to be displayed, one giving the free wi-fi password and the other to indicated the responsibilities of the hirer when leaving the premises. Future events include the launch of Water Aid on April 14, the Harrison Collection event on April 21 and a coffee morning on May 7. The next meeting of the management committee will be on April 18.

Parish council - The latest meeting of the parish council was held in the village hall. A document was received from the new advisory group and a circular prepared to explain the group’s role. A new Public Rights of Way map has been put up next to The Haven. A planning application for The Hall has been received. It agreed that the recipient for the annual charity money award will be decided at the next meeting of the parish council on Thursday, May 3.

AYTON

Craft fair - There will be a craft fair in the village hall at East Ayton on Easter Monday, April 2, from 10am to 3pm. Tables cost £10. To reserve a table, phone Joy Tomlinson on 01723 862170.

Matinee theatre - The village hall in East Ayton is hosting matinee performance by the touring Library Theatre Group of two acts from Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads. Bed Among The Lentils and A Lady Of Letters will be performed on March 22 at 2pm. BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

It’s a farce - Brompton-by-Sawdon Radio Players will be performing a new comedy called Tour De Farce in Brompton Village Hall on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Marylyn Muir, phone 01723 850412. They are priced at £7.50 and include a buffet supper. There will be a licensed bar available together with soft drinks. It is an adult show and not suitable for children.

Race night - Brompton Cricket Club will be holding its annual race night in the village hall on Saturday, April 7 with the first race will be at 7.30pm. Anyone who wants to attend as a racehorse owner, can buy horses from cricket club members for £7.50 which also includes entry to the event. Entry costs on the night for all other race goers will be £3.50. A pie and peas supper is included in the price.

Church - The Mothering Sunday service at All Saints Church will be Morning Prayer at 11am and will be conducted by Dr Don Jones. There is also a family service of Holy Communion at 9.30am at St Matthew’s Church, Hutton Buscel.

FADMOOR

Auction sale - There will be an auction sale in village hall on Monday, March 12 at 7pm to raise money towards the maintenance and upkeep of the defibrillators in Gillamoor and Fadmoor. The defibrillators need servicing regularly.

HELMSLEY

Probus - Helmsley and District men’s luncheon club held its annual invitation lunch at the Feathers Hotel on Tuesday, February 27. Members were encouraged to invite their wives to the lunch and, despite the heavy snow, many made it and enjoyed the meal followed by a raffle. The club meets on the last Tuesday of the month at the Feathers and the next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 27. To join the club or for more information, phone the secretary on 01439 771866.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Environment group - The group met in the King’s Head, with new members present and new ideas aired. A commendation to the group from the town council was read out, with the Give or Take Days and the Repair Cafe were specifically mentioned. The work of the group was further encouraged by a generous collection at recent the funeral of John Carlisle. Thanks were expressed to his family. New ideas for plastic waste reduction in the town were agreed. Shopping lists with ‘How little plastic can you take home today’ will be printed and available in several shops. It was also decided to make cloth shopping bags during quiet times at the Repair Cafe. Steady progress is being made with the cycle-track project, and the enhancement of local bus services. It was also agreed to publicise the fundraising activities of the library, including a sponsored cycle ride and a craft workshop. Dancing show - The Sarah Louise Ashworth Dance School is holding its bi-annual showcase at Lady Lumley’s School, Pickering, on Saturday, March 17 at 5.15pm and Sunday, March 18 at 2pm and 5.30pm. The show involves a trip around the world, musical theatre highlights and the comic ballet La Fille mal gardee. Tickets are £5, children £4, under 2s free but require a ticket. As space is limited, there will be a maximum number allowed of 30 people and priority will be given to those who have attended the lunchtime reflections. All Saints Church - The annual parochial church meeting will be held on Monday, March 19 at the bowling club house at 7.30pm. Reports will be given from the churchwardens and priest in charge, new members of the parochial church council will be elected and the list of sidespeople updated. Members of the junior church will celebrate Mothering Sunday by giving out flowers to the women in the congregation and take part in building the Easter garden. Children are welcome to join the junior church which meets at 10.30am on Sundays in term time.

Band concert - Kirkbymoorside Brass Band’s concert in the Memorial Hall on Sunday at 7.30pm will feature the senior, community and junior bands with a preview of the national area test piece Odyssey. Gardening club - Guest speaker Sarah Hopps gave an illustrated talk called The Gardens of Britain at a recent meeting of the gardening club. She spoke about her career in horticulture which began with propagating and selling plants for 17 years, then broadcasting on Radio York’s programme Down to Earth, working for Central TV and is now a judge at the Harrogate Flower Show and a garden tour guide working for a local coach operator. A minute’s silence was held in remembrance of John Popham, one the club’s members who had died recently. He was a keen gardener and enjoyed exhibiting in the annual August Produce Show. The next meeting of the club will be held in the village hall on Tuesday, March 13 at 7.30pm when speaker Brian Hutchinson will return to give a talk called Spring Work in the Greenhouse. Admission on the door is £2 and includes tea, coffee, biscuit and entry into the evening’s raffle.

Lacemakers - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Lacemakers in the village hall on Saturday, March 17 from 10am to 3pm.

Jazz festival - The sixth Ryedale Festival of Traditional Jazz will be held from Sunday, July 22 to Saturday, July 28. If tickets are bought before Thursday, May 31 they cost £5 for the Sunday Spirituals concert and £50 for the Monday to Saturday concerts. Individual tickets for any of the Monday to Saturday concerts cost £10. After May 31 prices increase to £12 and £60 respectively. Musical Memories - The RVS Hungate Centre is the venue for Musical Memories on Monday, March 12 from 11am to noon. The aim is to provide sessions where people can meet up with friends, old and new, to share in singing songs together, with the added benefit of a biscuit with a cuppa. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person to include refreshments is requested.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 12, 19 and 23. This week’s draw will be increased to £300.

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion on Sunday. Using a combination of the three readings set for the day, he reflected on the need for a firm foundation to face the challenges of life. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, and Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of communion. Enid Plevey and Carole Beswick were sidespersons and Trish Winlayson and Elizabeth Chapman served refreshments. Lay preacher John Worthy led the 11am service of modern worship and preached from the account in John’s gospel about the cleansing of the temple. Liz Cremer read and Elizabeth Bradley was the sidesperson. Richard Fuller led the sung worship with John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jenny and Duncan Bland ran the Sunday Club and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

Methodists - The service on Sunday was prepared and led by Bob Jackman. The organist was Doreen Lawson and the welcomer was Allan Dunnington, who also took the offering. The service began with the Lenten prayers and placing of the element being carried out by Eileen Burn. Bible readings were given by Amanda Clayton who read from Genesis, Bert Blower who read from Corinthians and Sheena Dunnington who read from John’s gospel. During the service Bob spoke briefly about the lives of St Patrick and St Columba and the hymns were chosen with an Irish theme. The service this Sunday at 10.30am will be taken by Derek Orwin. The monthly coffee morning is on Saturday at 10.30am.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s - There will be an all-age worship service for Mothering Sunday, led by Barbara Grice, at St Hilda’s Church on Sunday at 10.30am.

Quiz - A quiz in aid of the village hall will be at the East Riding pub on Saturday at 8pm. It is for teams of up to four people and the entry cost is £1 per person. There will also be a raffle.

Methodist news - The Tuesday Coffee Morning hostess was Judith Ruston and donations for coffee continue to be given to the Circuit breakfast for the homeless held at Westborough Methodist Church, Scarborough. Sunday morning worship was led by Rev Nigel Spencer. The organist was Chris Cade and the audio-visual display which the Rev Spencer had prepared was operated by Liz Aconley, who also read the Lenten Liturgy. Jenny Ireland presented the 30 pieces of silver to put on the Lenten cross. Liz Aconley also read the ten Commandments from the book of Exodus. Jean Brown read the New Testament lesson from Corinthians. The service this week, Mothering Sunday, is at 10.30am will be an all age worship led by Rev Dr Bob Whitfield, assisted by his wife, Brenda.

Messy Church - There will be a session of Messy Church in the Methodist Chapel on Saturday staring at 4.45pm.

Man of letters - Rob McNeilly won £480 in Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday with the letters M, R and U. Next week’s prize fund is £45.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - Caroline Neuff will give an illustrated talk called Following the Viking Trail at the next meeting of the People’s Guild on Tuesday, March 13 at 7.15pm. The last meeting was cancelled because of snow.

SNAINTON

Concert - The Easy Band, based at the Scarborough Music Centre, will be giving a concert in the village hall on Friday, March 16 at 7.30pm. They will be playing a varied programme under the baton of Ralph Alder. A bar and refreshments will be available. Active Tuesdays - Every Tuesday between 7pm and 8.30pm there will be Active Tuesday sessions in the cricket pavilion. It is an opportunity to dance, join in games, listen to music or sing along. Save a life - The Royal Life Saving Society UK’s free Save A Baby’s Life workshop on Wednesday, February 28 was postponed because of snow. It is an informal workshop to teach practical skills to cope in a baby emergency including basic resuscitation and treatment for choking. Thornton-le-Dale - The February meeting was well attended by members and four guests. Birthday cards were presented to Lily Brookfield, Joyce Helliwell and Mary Mortonson. Names were taken for the Esk Valley Theatre, the Spring lunch, the Anglo-Indian lunch and the June outing to Scarborough Spa. Ruth Ainscough agreed to represent the group at the Spring Council meeting. Members were reminded that the Tour de Yorkshire will be coming through the village on Saturday, May 5 and the branch have been invited to take part in a fundraising event at the village hall. The suggestions for Thornton-le-Dale Show were agreed as a Linus blanket, a jar of strawberry jam, a knitted or crocheted poppy, four squares of a traybake and a photograph of a garden visitor. The speaker at the meeting was Roger Osbourne who gave an insight into the geology and landscape of the North York Moors. The branch may follow up his talk with a guided fossil walk. Refreshments were served by Bridget Eldridge, Carol Rynehart, Lesley Mitchell and Lesley Gray. During social time, members took part in a light-hearted ‘Getting to Know You’ activity. The next meeting is on Tuesday, March 13, when Julie Ryan will talk about International Rescue. Guests are welcome.
